Greetings everyone!
The 2010 Youth Sailing Program at HYC will be beginning next Monday with the start of Session 1. As you may have seen at the HYC website, we have a great team of Instructors this year. Headed by our Director, Frank Pizzo, they all gathered this morning to begin planning and gearing up. Enrollment is close to full for the first session with a few more spots to fill for the second session which starts July 19th.

The team is excited to be working with a larger group of Skippers and Racers compared to last year. These Skippers and Racers will be utilizing five new Club 420’s as part of our collective commitment to the Program’s success. Replacing our long-serving fleet of JY15’s, the Club’s older 420’s will be re-rigged as RAD 420’s for teaching the Mates and Recruits. What is a RAD 420? It’s a Club 420 except the mainsail is smaller and the rig controls are simplified. Combined with our fleet of Optimist prams and our skilled Instructors, the goals for sailors in both Recruits and Mates will be met.
On 5-6 August, we’ll be hosting the 6th Annual HYC Youth Regatta which for the second year running, will also be the venue for the 420 State of Maine Championships. There’s going to be a lot going on this summer and we want you to join in and help out.

Please email Frank Pizzo at sailingprogram.hyc@gmail.com, as he and the team need help on several fronts; most immediately with set up chores this week, then, Thursday night races, Big Boat Days, etc.

Bentley and Brenda Collins will be coordinating this year’s Youth Regatta and there will be more details to follow. Please email Bentley at Bentley@sabreyachts.com. This is a big event and the racers’s really enjoy visiting HYC, as you saw in the past few years so join in again!

Thank you all- see you out on the Bay!
Henry

At the end of last season, the Board of Directors decided to expand the role for the Youth Sailing Program Director. I am grateful to the Board and especially a dedicated group of members (read below) whose diligence in seeking a new Director will assure the continued success of the Program.
Due to their efforts, I am very excited to announce the appointment of Frank Pizzo as our new Youth Sailing Program Director for 2010. Frank is currently the Head Coach for the Bowdoin College Sailing Team. His previous collegiate coaching experiences include serving at the assistant coach at Bowdoin in the spring of 2008 and as the head coach at Columbia University in the fall of 2007. A graduate of Bowdoin in 2006, Frank earned four varsity letters and captained the team in both his junior and senior campaigns. He was voted the team’s Most Valuable Skipper on three occasions between 2004 and 2006, helping propel the team to new heights in both fleet and team racing.

More to the point though, Frank brings extensive background in running Junior Sailing Programs most recently at Larchmont Yacht Club and Pequot Yacht Club on Long Island Sound as well as Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, RI. Still an active racer, Frank has completed in two Newport-to-Bermuda Offshore Races but mostly enjoys racing dinghies. He crews on Lightnings and frostbites in Inter Clubs. Additionally, he is an active racer in the Vanguard 15 class.
My thanks to Rob Taisey, Cindy Drake, Tom Schwarm, John Karp and Louisa Price for all their help.
Presently, Frank and I are filling out the team of Instructors. We’ll need volunteers for many tasks to be done in preparation for this season, so don’t wait to be called- get involved NOW!
Thanks,
Henry Bliss

Our 5 Annual HYC Youth Regatta was a huge success not for just the beautiful weather but the tremendous help and volunteer spirit that drives this event.

This year we hosted over 90 boats and somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 sailors along with coaches and parents, for two days of racing which included the State of Maine 420 Championships. Sailors competed from the following Yacht Clubs: Agamenticus, Boothbay Harbor, Bucks Harbor, Camden, Castine, HYC, Kollegewidgwok, Peaks Island, Portland, Southport and Sunapee (NH).

HYC’s team of Instructors and Coaches ran a top-notch Regatta headed by Spencer Howe, Garrett Bowne and Amy Lones. Allyson Fuehrer, Eric Schwarm and Katie Drake provided support and Emily Selinger made sure all the sailors who weren’t competing continued with the Program.

As in past years, a small army of volunteers put in a great deal of effort to assure that everyone had a great time.

Denley Poor handled all the paperwork with registrations and payments
Sue Jennings provided breakfasts on both days.
Mary Martin coordinated with many folks on production and delivery for Thursday’s bag lunches and a full dinner
PLUS Friday’s cookout a la Barge
Carter Becker with help from many others, provided the signature cookout (on the barge).
Willie Thomas race patrolled, helped with shore crew and manned the grills.
Anne Fuehrer procured T-shirts for all participants.
Peter Gerquest provided his boat for spectators.
Louisa Price was invaluable both on the water and off.
Stevan Morrow helped on shore crew.
Faith Baker procured all the event trophies.
Cliff George provided his boat for the Opti race committee crew and helped on shore crew.
Dave Knudsen provided spectators with some local knowledge.
Rob Taisey and John Karp helped the Race Committee on “Jackpot” donated by Jack Thomas.
Spencer Drake helped visitors with unloading, trailer parking, website updating and race patrol.

The list goes on…..

Special thanks to those who graciously hosted 25 sailors from Boothbay, Castine, Christmas Cove, Kollegewidgwok and Sunapee Yacht Clubs:

Brook & Cynthia Taliaferro
Larry & Marsha Welsher
Arnie MacDonald & Liza Moore
Lev & Meaghan Davis
Kris & Sue Jennings
Stafford & Leslie Soule
Spencer & Cindy Drake
Tom & Pat Roeber
Willie & Jill Thomas

To all that participated, thank you very much! This is what it’s all about.

We have posted some pictures (click on “Photos” at the top)- more to come. Please send any photos you’d like to share to sailingprogram.hyc@gmail.com.
