HYC Instructors for 2010:
We are very excited to announce the appointment of Frank Pizzo as our new Youth Sailing Program Director for 2010. Frank brings extensive background in running Junior Sailing Programs most recently at Larchmont Yacht Club and Pequot Yacht Club on Long Island Sound as well as Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, RI. Still an active racer, Frank has competed in two Newport-to-Bermuda Offshore Races but mostly enjoys racing dinghies. He crews on Lightnings and frostbites in Inter Clubs. Additionally, he is an active racer in the Vanguard 15 class.
We’ll be announcing our team of Instructors for the 2010 season shortly.
Junior Program Director:
Frank Pizzo
Frank is currently the Head Coach for the Bowdoin College Sailing Team. His previous collegiate coaching experiences include serving at the assistant coach at Bowdoin in the spring of 2008 and as the head coach at Columbia University in the fall of 2007. A graduate of Bowdoin in 2006, Frank earned four varsity letters and captained the team in both his junior and senior campaigns. He was voted the team’s Most Valuable Skipper on three occasions between 2004 and 2006, helping propel the team to new heights in both fleet and team racing.

Head Race Coach:
Eric Schwarm (420 Race Coach)
I am currently a freshmen at Roger Williams University where I am an engineering major and a member of the sailing team. I grew up sailing at HYC and this will be my third summer teaching sailing. I am very excited to spend another summer at HYC.

Skippers Instructor:
Garrett Bowne
I grew up sailing at Portland Yacht Club, and raced there in both optimists and 420s for many years. I co-captained the North Yarmouth Academy Sailing team for two years. This will be my fourth summer coaching sailing, and my second summer at HYC. I currently go to Lake Forest College in Chicago, and have sailed on their club team, as there isn’t an officially sanctioned team. This Spring I hope to be involved with coaching the Lake Forest High School team. I’m returning this year as the Skippers Coach, and am looking forward to seeing who’s on board this summer. I’m very excited to be back in Maine and working at HYC this summer. I hope that everyone is as excited as I am for the summer to begin.
Head Instructor, Mates:
Kim Dempsey
This May, Kim will graduate from Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, Connecticut. During high school, she sailed for the Greenwich Academy sailing team and was team captain her senior year. She has been sailing since she was six. She took lessons at both Stamford Yacht Club on Long Island Sound and Harraseeket Yacht Club. For the past three summers, Kim taught at Stamford Sailing Foundation in Stamford, Connecticut. She is really excited to be back in Maine this summer!

Instructors:
Max Jennings
I currently attend Freeport High School and am part of the Southern Maine High School Sailing Program at Sail Maine. Other extra circular activities I participate in are cross country running and cross country skiing. My family owns a Sabre 34, and as a kid I learned the beauty of sailing on her. I spent 7 years going through the youth sailing program at HYC. Over these years I learned the art and science of sailing, but most significantly, the importance of having fun on the water. I enjoy working with kids and am really excited to be a part of HYC this summer. HYC was a big part of my youth and I hope to provide that experience with young, interested sailors.
Katie Drake
Hey Everyone! I am excited to return to the HYC Youth Sailing Program this summer. Currently a Junior at Cheverus High School, I compete in fleet and team races with the high school team in club 420’s at Sail Maine. I have been part of the HYC Sailing for the last eight years. Whenever possible I race on our family’s Sonar and I hope to get my Laser ready for the upcoming season too. Although there is still plenty of skiing ahead, I’m looking forward to this summer and know we will have a great program again!

Eliza Price
Hi! I am Eliza. Next fall I will be a freshman at Connecticut College where I will be a member of their sailing team. I have been a part of the sailing program since I was 8. I love being out on the water sailing no matter what the weather is. I have sailed four springs on So. Maine High School team. When I am not sailing dinghies I am mast girl on my family’s boat, Big Dog Party. I also enjoy sailing an Etchell, More Cowbell. This will be my second year teaching the recruits and mates and I look forward to the upcoming summer.

Allyson Feuher
My name is Ally and I will be a senior at Freeport High School in the fall. I had such a great time working with all the young sailors last year (even during the monsoon) and I am so excited to come back to HYC this summer! When I am not working at the club, donning our impressively stylish instructor polos, I can be found somewhere on the water lobstering, fishing or searching for buried treasure. Otherwise, I am inland playing soccer, basketball, or lacrosse. I’ve been spending my summers at HYC for years, and I am so pumped to share my love of sailing with the Recruits and Mates!
